SOMALI COMMUNITY SERVICE, INC

Historical Background

Picture
Somalia has been without a government since 1991, a nation was plunged into lawlessness and clan warfare. The war continues forcing nearly one-half of the seven million people to flee to other countries in all; twenty four countries host Somali refugees.  From the effects of the war, famine and disease, it is estimated that hundreds of thousands have died during this two decade conflict.

Somali refugees started arriving in the U.S. in 1991. Since 1995, Omaha, Nebraska has proven to be a popular destination for refugees and today Omaha has one of the largest Somali populations in the U.S.  It is estimated that there are at least 3,000 Somali immigrants and refugees living in the Omaha metropolitan area.  In addition, it is estimated that 20 immigrants can be expected. These figures give a critical reason why the Somali community Service, Inc. must continue providing services while preparing to address future needs of this population group.
